Owltree Farm - Located 10 km north of Kingston,Nova Scotia is a 40 acre mixed wood and pasture small farm belonging to three registered Haflingers and their caregivers, Connie and Tim.
Hello. We are Connie and Tim, a couple of city-slickers who made the’ mistake’ one day of trying some farm-raised eggs, and so began our dream of owning our own flock of layers. We bought our small farm in the Valley in 2001, and within a year we had a flock of chickens, some guinea fowl, a handful of ducks, a nasty goose and a trio of goats. We unofficially named our place Owltree Farm in honour of an injured Barred Owl who was rehabilitated on our property shortly after our arrival. Barnard, as we called him, settled in a large maple tree (the Owltree) beyond the meadow, glaring hungrily as he watched Tim deliver his daily take-out menu of dead chickens. The chickens disappeared and so did he, but for quite some time we could hear his distinctive whoo-whoo-whoo as he learned to make his own way in the world.
Our first summer here, we visited the Annapolis Valley Exhibition in Lawrencetown, NS. The participants were remarkably friendly and forthcoming and they made a couple of outsiders feel very much accepted. Suddenly the idea of having a horse to help out around the property seemed like a good one – a little logging, maybe driving. By mid-week I started asking anyone and everyone about the temperament and qualities of various breeds, be it riders, jumpers, pullers. The one breed everyone recommended was a Haflinger. Well, the rest is history: to know them is to love them.
