Nova Scotia Haflinger Club President’s Message - for 2018 This past year has been good for the Nova Scotia Haflinger Club. Our finances and membership are stable, and the members have been busy with their horses. Financially we are maintaining a healthy bank balance. Our fundraiser this year was the Haflinger Calendar put together by Ardith Hatch; also, Haflinger Decals were sold to help raise club funds. We sponsored classes at the Annapolis Valley Ex and Queen’s County Ex. And donated to the IWK telethon. The Canadian Haflinger Association did not support the Provincial clubs in 2018, having put promotional funds into an ad campaign in the Canadian Horse Journal. Several of our club members and their horses were featured in the ads. We also welcomed new members to the club roster. Highlights from the past year include numerous activities involving members and their Haflingers. Our members participated in Haflinger classes at the Spring Draft Show, the Annapolis Valley Ex and the Queen’s County Ex. Our PEI member is part of an Equine Agility club from England. Each month she gets a new agility course and sends in a video tape of her horse completing the course for an evaluation. She is now working on liberty training with her Haffy. Sounds like fun! A great day of driving with the Lewis family clan brought members from across NS to Bass River for a Trail Drive and lunch. We met for three General meetings in January, June and November. Our November meeting was combined with a Christmas Party with great laughter, gift exchange and good fun. Unfortunately we did not host any clinics this year. We have an active FaceBook page and website with many people from around the world viewing our content. I have sat as president for the past two years and my observation is that I know there are more Haflingers in our province than are represented by the membership. It would be wonderful to reach out to those Haflinger owners who may be looking for the community of our club or information on training and feeding of their Haflinger. I don’t mind picking up the phone and calling. I will be stepping down as president of the Nova Scotia Haflinger Club as I expect to become more involved in the Canadian Haflinger Association. I am confident that my successor will carry on growing the club in many directions. I will remain on the board as past-president to assist in every way. This organization relies on its willing volunteers and many thanks go to the board and members at large who have significantly contributed to club events. Every Haflinger and every member is important to this club. We have expanded our boundaries to all three maritime provinces and hopefully will continue this relationship. Gillian Allan donated a wood art item by artist Mary Donkin. Raffle tickets were sold on this item. $40 raised at the AGM were donated to the CHA and $176 raised in Nova Scotia were donated to NSHC. The draw on this item was made and Verna Seaman’s ticket (sold by Clifford Hatch) was drawn. Congratulations Verna. |
WORMING - Contributed by Janet Trimper
Worming trick that I tried today. Works quite well and no fight. I would suggest giving carrots at other times to avoid association. Someone else told me that they slather a piece of bread with the wormer, fold it over and their horse gobbles it down. Will try that next time. |

Here is something new: Northville Heritage Center May 21, 2016. Budgie Trimper spent time working his two Haflingers at their 'Planting Day' event.
Still worth holding on to: Donald Armstrong's 100th birthday at the Annapolis Valley Nursing Home
